cyber dance records unleash their fifth record entitled somewhere out on the nightside. the ep consists of four tracks introducing a new batch of artists to the cyber dance cartel, brassica, serious lover, bill ambrose and melanie houston. brassica is the music of hackney bedroom producer michael anthony wright. hes had a couple of records on dissident and has a few more lined up for some other quite well-known labels over the next year. ballo dei morti was conceived one dark christmas day in milan and features the chorus of slayers dead skin mask vocoded in italian. the track has been eagerly awaited on vinyl after several months of attention through blogs such as 20 jazz funk greats and vice magazines music blog. serious lover is the brain-child of london based producer sam ryan who fuses electro-soul influences of early jam and lewis production with a more modern, harder sound, employing vintage synths and archaic drum machines in the studio and electronic musicians for the full live show. bill ambrose has been producing music on his collection of vintage synths and drum machines for over a decade, working behind the scenes as a producer or engineer on several releases. he wrote paranoid specifically for cyber dance earlier this year. melanie houston is a dj, musician and producer from london with a passion for dark, emotional music and a previous history in berlin where she djd and contributed music for the cult techno label tresor. with influences incorporating everything from avant-garde electronics to 80s synth pop, melanies as renowned for her skills on the turntables in the mix as for her abilities in the studio.

this new collaboration between two of cadenzas finest talents makes its official debut on mobilee with black shoes, a cut that pops, crackles, and snaps like youd never believe. dance floor ready yet unwilling to sacrifice an explicit focus on the details, black shoes pulsates with bass while suggesting a kind of lightness as whispered and fragmented voices hiss and murmur in the background. the melodics, which give off the feel of being in constant flux, provide a nice contrast to the intensely regularized bass drum while simultaneously meshing with the popping percussion that guide the track along its course. breakdowns filled with the sounds of static and 8-bit provide a nice experimental touch to this track that works equally well as a late-night romp as it does on the headphones. b-side speech also gives off a stuttered feel but is even more blippy and fragmented than its counterpart while migrating towards a more jacking vibe. brito and toro compliment this fractured sound with extensive use of vocal samples—both spoken and sung—that, while incomprehensible, lock in seamlessly with the overall feel of the track. melody here references both vintage sounds and traditional minimalism with the end result being a fusion of the two that is truly extraordinary.

lars niekisch is most well-known for his berlin partnership with frank hermann as trick and kubic. since 2005 they have carved out vintage releases on labels such as get physical and great stuff. voyager is lars first solo release, acidic, ravey and thoroughly deep down and dirty, it has smashed many a main room in recent weeks. voyager has already been licensed to a forthcoming hernan cattaneo mix compilation, and the single also features the debut remix from long term buzzin fly resident dj, chris woodward. the track has received great feedback from a-list club djs including john digweed, solomon, cattaneo and the dirt crew. this is the latest single from ben watts respected imprint, buzzin fly. collectors artwork on the 12inch.

the first release on this new label is from gatto fritto who has released records on dissident and electric minds and recently remixed subway on souljazz. the a side hex is a nine minute, mid tempo, atmospheric, bearded disco trip taking in falsetto vocals, straight to video synths, acoustic guitars and the budget, analog death rattle of a vintage siel cruise. the bmside beachy head is a teutontastic tribute to the uks favourite suicide spot. a 3/4 krauty synth builder that spills into layered waves of guitars and unforgiving rocks of heavy analog bass...think klaus schulze and steve reich rolling off a cliff in 1983 datsun cherry.

this is quite simply one of the most glorious records you will hear this year. it would be easy to lazily reference it against classic period rephlex/planet mu stuff (oops, i just did!), and indeed it appears to share some of the same heritage (even going so far as to feature a remix of rephlex artist global goon in its tracklisting) - but chris leary aka ochre is obviously a man on his own mission. gorgeously lush, but at the same time super-funky…as electronic as kraftwerk starring in a remake of tron, yet somehow as pastoral and organic as edward elgar…much like his label-mate ed chamberlain, leary manages that tricky task of being supremely technical in his programming and arrangements, but without losing the heart and soul of the music amidst all the studio trickery. you know that old chestnut often said when referring to vintage or classic music, >they dont make them like that any more<? well they do…and here it is! simply fantastic.

jorge has been a central figure on the latin-american musical stage since the 80s-first as the co-founder of chiles beloved political rockers los prisioneros, then as a restlessly inventive solo musician and as one half of gonzálo martínez, the experimental electronic duo with dandy jack (martin schopf). now based in mexico city and working alongside loreto otero, jorge presents los updates, a new project combining electro-pop with an unusual approach to minimalist house and techno. designed both as a studio affair and a live performance, los updates expands its collaborative scope by reaching out to a crew of well-known chilean and european musicians who were central to the development of chilean techno in the mid 90s: ricardo villalobos, dandy jack, luciano and tobias freund, all of whom deliver defiantly original remixes across a series of 12-inch singles. tobias. fills the a-side with his remix of >pictures of you< simply one of the most dazzling things youll hear this year. tobias. recent string of work-singles for wagon repair and ostgut ton, as well as remixes for two armadillos and jim rivers-has shown him to be a master of the hypnotic groove, and here he entrances like never before, laying down a stark 808 drum pattern which he threads through dubby keys, analog explosions and liquid bass figures. on the b-side cadenzas luciano is getting late and brings his inimitable touch to the remix of >etting late<. luciano reworks the song into a lean, bleepy groove that marries the cool restraint of vintage dbx to lucianos own effusive style, buoyant and percussive and completely enveloping..
